Today we are introducing the first in our new series of MEET THE MAKER posts and we are delighted to be introducing Simon Jay from Twisted Salvage! Simon has been exhibiting with us for a couple of years now and his hand built industrial furniture and lighting is very popular with followers of Frock Around The Clock. This week Julie managed to catch up with him during his hectic schedule to ask him a few questions about his unique, quirky and original designs, all created from salvaged materials.............
Simon, how did Twisted Salvage start?
I started Twisted Salvage in 2014 as a bit of a hobby to use up some bits of old stock and scrap that would otherwise be going to the dump. It turned out they were hugely popular so I decided to continue and its been continuing from strength to strength ever since. I started making lamps of my own design but now a big chunk of my work is commissions - people come to me with a brief or an idea and I do my best to make it happen.
How would you describe your business and the work you do?
I make quirky furniture and lighting from salvaged, recycled and unusual parts. I try to create a one-off piece of functional artwork, something that can be great focal talking point in your home. Some people call it found art, some people call it assemblage art, but the outcome is just the same.
Have you always been interested in using vintage items?
I have a background in buying and selling vintage, antiques and collectables and the interest first came from my grandfather who was a keen collector, verging on hoarder! Twisted salvage was an alternative branch of that which really appealed to me as I LOVE making things (that part I got from my dad!)
Do you have a favourite piece so far?
One of my main rules i work by is ‘if I don’t love it, then it won’t go on sale!’ that might sound a bit backward but I genuinely believe you can get a sense of the passion that has gone into making a piece or artwork, whatever it may be, and people can pick up on that! So if I don’t love it, I don’t finish it! That said, my favourite piece to date was actually a piece that now has pride of place in my parents conservatory. It's a space themed lamp made from old car and tool parts!
What influences your designs at the moment?
I love anything industrial whether it be old or new. I love engineering and I love to see how things work. that has always inspired my pieces.
What plans do you have for the future?
I hope to have continued success and my ultimate dream is to one day be able to do this as my full time job.
